Blip.TV financial round, less viewers than Veoh

Blip.TV, NYC based private company focused on content delivery and revenue distribution with creators, just raised more cash for their operation.

The round was led by Ambient Sound Investments from Skype fame, which noted the narrow focus of Blip as a major differentiation form other video sharing sites - as blip are not approaching the viral market.

I’ve met Dina Kaplan,   Blip.tv COO and was impressed with her commitment to the creators. She also gave some good points re the direction the market is heading, with a mix of off site ads and sponsorships.

However, focus doesn’t come for free, as this graph, comparing Blip.TV visitors to Veoh, geared also toward viral videos, shows that Blip has significantly less unique visitors and grows slower than Veoh.

I hope that Blip will have deep enough pockets to continue with slower growth than the viral market, but more loyal viewers and creators.

  • Heya,

Thanks for the post! We're really excited about our new round of funding, the addition of the Skype guys to our team and the opportunities for growth in the future -- both in terms of additional services that we can offer content creators and in video viewers.

I did want to point out, too, that Compete measures visitors to a destination site through a statistical sampling and doesn't necessarily track network video views, a more important statistic for blip.tv and most video sites than visits to the actual Web site. A huge percentage of blip.tv video views happen off-site -- on creators' own Web sites, in iTunes, in AOL Video, MSN Video and throughout the Web.

    Yours,

It's worth mentioning that Veoh is chock full of illegally uploaded video of television shows, movies, and music videos. It's not hard to find, either - just look on the "Most Popular" page:

    http://www.veoh.com/browse/videos.html

A quick browse reveals "The Simpsons", "Pirates of the Caribbean 3", as well as anime of various stripes which appears to be very popular.
  • Yes, probably worth mentioning you're right we cater to Web shows (as opposed to one-off viral videos) and also that we are a syndicator. We send blip videos through to AOL Video, Yahoo! Video and elsewhere throughout the internet, so we're not drawing eyeballs into one destination site (which is what that graph is monitoring.)

    Hi,

Blip.tv is amazing. We plan to host our video content with them....
  • Shelley, tell us more about your show
  • I have not seen or done veoh but I have found blip to give more rights to the video owners (than viemo or the other sites). That is my main reason for loving the site soo much! I do all my work off site through my blog as how Hudack said many use of their users use the site.
  • Tom - you are right about Blip, check out the latest coverage I added today.

I realize this is an old post by now but I am a big fan of Blip.tv. It is my first distribution option for my shows/videos. I think it still is growing and developing (but aren't we all). We don't use the ad share for all our products (copyright concerns for our clients) but we will buy-in for sure when we have the right product (which will be soon).

For a content creator i think it is a wicked great portal and the auto-publish option is a big time saver. Brilliant idea.

Keep driving 'er Blip, slower growth will stand the test of time.
