Thanks for the feedback – there are several exciting ideas here.

Jim – I completely agree that live is just another application. We need to find where it fits, and more to it – where it doesn’t fit at all. Your experience in traditional media is extremely valuable in this sense – thanks for sharing!

Adam- cool way to use this technology. DV camera brings a whole new dimension to these shows. What bandwidth do you have there?

Goldie – I think it is possible – I am meeting Nir Ofir from BlogTV tomorrow, and I will ask him to look at this point.

Rob – another cool idea. I wonder if the platform can scale to support these events. Having a bloggers event online can be amazing.

I am upgrading my uplink soon – why don’t we try some of these things? I still find the notification process a bit problematic.

I think multi-location events are a great use of the technology. I’ve been thinking a great deal about how best to employ this for major national or global events. In the meantime, we’re just looking at doing some live broadcasts of special events related to our usual show, Political Lunch (http://www.PoliticalLunch.com). In addition to election events which naturally fit with our show, we’ll be throwing parties for journalists and bloggers occasionally, and we’d love to do a live show.

Kfir, all three of your ideas are very cool. The one that jumps out of me is this:

“Join forces with 3 other video Bloggers and do a multi-location online event, covering one common topic”

I like that Blog.tv allows you to do this. Then you have the synergy of the different locations and all of their communities’ chat questions.

Live just for the sake of live is something that gets old. Live tv with purpose, centered around an event of immediacy, driven by networked communities is the real magic.

I have been using ustream.tv since March to broadcast a live music performance show from my coffee shop here in Minnesota, (7pm CST Thursdays on ustream.tv). I have incorporated use of a DV camera, and live switching through an offline Panasonic s-video switcher. I have found that the technology is lacking somewhat in the bandwidth available, which causes some AV sync issues. However, as a free service, it is remarkable, certainly in the audio quality which can be achieved. I suggest anyone involved to make use of your DV camera, as it provides a much better image than any webcam, and work to achieve the best audio feed possible. There are several good usb microphones which surpass the typical microphone input on most PCs, and are always a better option than the built-in.

One option which I’ve done is to do a particular task on a live broadcast. For example, you can prepare food live. (I will be putting a blog post pointing to that up on my blog shortly if you want to see.) You can even involve the audience, in addition to answering any questions you could also have options on how things are made/prepared and let the audience give input. If done well it can provide people with the live audience experience (that they are the live audience) while being distributed around the world.

Another thing that I always thought would be cool is on a service with co-hosting like Blogtv.com is to have remote conference participation. I wonder if a cohost (or primary host) could present at a conference via the web and get feedback from the other host & the chat room.

I think that a good site to look for how people are using this wisely is Chris creates podcasts from some of his live segments, and he has sponsors for his live “show.”

His experiences with the technology (and similar experiences by others) will also probably be discussed at various conferences, such as Podcamps, New Media Expo and Gnomedex.

I like how Chris P. also has archived material fairly easy to find on the live site.
