Mac, Gmail, Spam and an Apology

Yesterday my contacts received an email from my email address, promoting a web site. This email was not sent by me, and I immediately started to look for the source. I have to admit that my journalistic tendency made me hope that I was a victim to a Mac virus. However, after a thorough review, I found that Gmail was the source of the problem. I took the required measures, including removing my contacts from online services, in order to prevent this event from happening again.

I apologize to all my contacts for the inconvenience. This case is a certainly a reminder why online services are not necessarily a better future…

  • that email cracked me up! I figured you got a ton of emails back about it so I thought I wouldn't your chain...do they get any traction from emails like that? It was such an obvious hack...and horror of horrors...no bcc!
  • Well, first of all, may I say that I am not offended at all that I didn't get any spam from you. Being one of your best friends apparently does not get me into your contract list. But ok.

I'll just sit here in the dark...

I do not think that removing them all from your Gmail is the right way to go. You think that keeping them on your personal computer is safer? Just take a guess at how many spam is sent from personal lists on computers to the once is a blue moon that Google will be hacked.
  • Yuv, it is a fact that Macs are currently less vulnerable to viruses. Also, by your way of thought, I should keep my contacts in Gmail even if they failed?
  • @kathryn - yep it was a busy day... the saddest thing is that some people replied to me saying that they are not interested in that service...
  • Hi nice post, i read your blog from time to time but i was wondering something. I also run a blog on a similar topic, but i get 1,000's of spam comments and emails every day does that happen to you.. Any ideas to stop it? I currently have commenting disabled but i want to turn it back on.. Thanks!
