What Companies are Missing in Social Media Marketing

Again and again I meet with companies and political parties that think, mainly due to the hype that we create, that social media marketing is the best thing since sliced bread. They believe that Twitter and Facebook are magic tools that immediately create the holy grail of marketing – viral campaign. As if the fact that a brand or a political candidate has a Twitter account that is operated by a communication studies freshman actually makes a difference.

Social media marketing requires something crucial that not everyone, or every brand is willing to do – commit! Commit to an open discussion, commit to a long term marketing effort, commit to talk with, and at your audience.

Why?

Cause it takes time to gain followers and active community members.

Cause people can call your bluff much faster than in traditional marketing channels. Just like it is easier to leave a message than to have a real conversation with someone. So you have to be honest and transparent.

Cause the minute you are bluffing you lose all your credibility – and harm your brand more than helping it

Cause it is not different then your relationship with spouse and business partner – it takes time to gain trust, but just a second to ruin it:

Wouldn’t you like to hear people saying the same things about your brand?

So don’t look at Social Media Marketing as some kind of silver bullet. It is a lot of work, commitment, trust building and long term thinking.

It is not, by any mean or form, a one night stand.

  • amen brother! well said
  • You nailed that. I also think there's something else not discussed mainly because if they did it might hinder funding social networks. The 'fad' element. You don't know how many people I know (myself included) who have myspace or facebook accounts but now only check them once in a while and don't spend a lot of time on them. After a short while they become a bit of a novelty item. So I think over time, it will become much harder to launch a viral campaign and have it be successful.

  • STUMBLED!

Couldn't have put it better, a lot of bloggers think that by adding that Twitter logo to their sidebar it's going to increase their traffic over night or be the thing that makes their blog a success, maybe after reading this post they will come back to reality.

Thanks for the feedback and stumble. I wish there was more ROI data there..
  • Dedication is a good word. The other one is 'patience'. As clients dive into the Facebook page, or Twitter feed, there's a serious desire to ask for the order.

The real life equivalent of an Amway salesman.

As more marketers think they want the magic, they will not only have to learn that the trick takes a lot of work, it also takes a lot of time.

Matt - thanks for your response and I totally agree with you.
Rosebud - social media marketing is a marketing niche, which uses social media tools such as blogs, social networks etc in order to convey a company's message. There is a lot of hype around it as it enables stronger emotional attachment as well as direct connection with customers. Some companies are thinking that it is simpler and brings more results in comparison to traditional marketing - something that I don't believe in. Feel free to connect with my directly via mail (kfir AT pravdam DOT com) if you'd like.
Ken - thanks for an insightful, detailed, and interesting comment. I am certain that there is more than that in this area :)
  • For me social networking is a great way to create a larger presence on the internet. I may not get a client directly through my efforts but it does make me more of a person to those researching who they are looking to work with online. I do think that many companies push themselves and products too much and providing a more human side may help build trust with consumers.
  • Hey Kfir, I'm glad my submissions sparked some interesting conversation around this on some social web sites!
You've definitely raised some points I run into very often and that's why I shared this with others. I thought about it more and at the heart of it, because social media is about relationships - it's just like real relationships.
Those people who you really stay friends with (in "real life") are the ones who remember to call you, keep track of what's up with you and send you a note on your birthday. They are also always there to take your call when you need something.
The same is true for social media.
  • Very good point about the commitement aspect. It amazes me how many people think they are just going to create a Digg, Twitter, and StumbleUpon profile and that's all they have to do.

  • Amen to it being a long term commitment and requiring work. I find the best strategy is find a single place you can work easily be it twitter, facebook, or any other outlet. Pick one and stay at it.
  • blond 2.0 from Israel should read this, she SN crazy...
  • Totally! Every time I talk to potential clients or groups I make sure to tell them up front that social media is not a magic wand. It takes work, commitment (as you said), identifying goals so you know if you're getting anywhere, and planning.

I love that video about long-term relationships! So nice.
