Totally! Every time I talk to potential clients or groups I make sure to tell them up front that social media is not a magic wand. It takes work, commitment (as you said), identifying goals so you know if you're getting anywhere, and planning.

I love that video about long-term relationships! So nice.

Amen to it being a long term commitment and requiring work. I find the best strategy is find a single place you can work easily be it twitter, facebook, or any other outlet. Pick one and stay at it.

Very good point about the commitement aspect. It amazes me how many people think they are just going to create a Digg, Twitter, and StumbleUpon profile and that's all they have to do.

Hey Kfir, I'm glad my submissions sparked some interesting conversation around this on some social web sites!
You've definitely raised some points I run into very often and that's why I shared this with others. I thought about it more and at the heart of it, because social media is about relationships - it's just like real relationships.
Those people who you really stay friends with (in "real life") are the ones who remember to call you, keep track of what's up with you and send you a note on your birthday. They are also always there to take your call when you need something.
The same is true for social media.

For me social networking is a great way to create a larger presence on the internet. I may not get a client directly through my efforts but it does make me more of a person to those researching who they are looking to work with online. I do think that many companies push themselves and products too much and providing a more human side may help build trust with consumers.

Matt - thanks for your response and I totally agree with you.
Rosebud - social media marketing is a marketing niche, which uses social media tools such as blogs, social networks etc in order to convey a company's message. There is a lot of hype around it as it enables stronger emotional attachment as well as direct connection with customers. Some companies are thinking that it is simpler and brings more results in comparison to traditional marketing - something that I don't believe in. Feel free to connect with my directly via mail (kfir AT pravdam DOT com) if you'd like.
Ken - thanks for an insightful, detailed, and interesting comment. I am certain that there is more than that in this area :)
