Dana, thank you for your comment - and you're absolutely right... It's time to move on. Sammy would want it that way.

What a terrific and convincing video! Creation of this sort of app really is a fascinating prospect. Yes, it's eerie, but I don't think of it as sinister at all. However, I think it has the potential to do a few counterproductive things: reenforce aspects of a relationship that are unpleasant, remind us of things about someone--not necessarily a loved one--that we didn't like, interfere with the grieving process and make it difficult to reach a healthy acceptance of that person's death. I also think people could sue if they felt that a loved one was being slandered in a sense.

Occasionally what does happen is that people, knowing they're near death, will have a video of themselves speaking to their unseen audience about their own lives, their hopes for their families' futures, their love for so and so. This, too, is a bit eerie. But it can be wonderful to see someone we've lost seemly come to life again.

There are simple things available to us now or conceivably available that serve a better purpose. We can look at photos, watch videos, read old letters (and e-mails and diary entries), read the Valentines Day and birthday cards we've received and continue talking about this person with friends and family. Maybe not as fascinating as the Envoy app, but continually comforting.

There are currently around 700 English language subtitled shows around the UK every week, of the latest films, as listed here: (Google subtitled cinema).

Subtitles on the cinema screen, for all to see. Although this is the preferred way to view cinema subtitles amongst most people that need them to enjoy a film, it requires cinemas to put on separate shows. Most people can't work their lives around one or two cinema shows a week, so currently, most people that would like to attend subtitled cinema shows can't do so. There's not enough choice of films and showtimes.

A 'personal' subtitle system, like the specs mentioned, or seat mounted displays, like they have in the US, would give people a better choice of films and showtimes, which would of course result in more people attending the cinema, purchasing popcorn & drinks etc.
