<p>If I told Dr. Gregory House that his season finale will affect the world of photography and film making, he'd probably answer with some witty-yet-rude comment about my possible film maker wonnabe frustration, and go to annoy Dr. Wilson.<br />
But strangely enough, <a class="zem_slink" title="House (TV series)" rel="imdb" href="http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0412142/">House MD</a> 6th season finale, aired tonight,  will be one of the most important events in the history of HDSLR filmmaking and affordable filmography as a whole. More to it, the debate that started due to the show's  Director of Photography  decision will affect not only these markets, but could be also a game changer to the whole filmmaking and TV industry, as well for the innovative camera company <a href="http://www.red.com/">RED</a>.<br />
The reason is simple. House MD's season finale was not shot on film as usual, but on a $2,700 camera from Canon, <a class="zem_slink" title="Canon EOS 5D Mark II" rel="wikipedia" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Canon_EOS_5D_Mark_II">5D Mark II</a>. And that's pretty damn affordable, in comparison to the cost of high end cameras.<br />
This is the story how simple cameras are changing the way stories are being told, how money is lost and gained, and how the filmmaking industry is changing forever.</p>
<p><strong>The Beginning of a Revolution?</strong></p>
<p>As I've laid out in a <a href="http://pravdam.com/2010/01/10/whats-hd-dslr-and-why-does-it-matter/" target="_blank">previous post</a>, HDSLR, stills <a class="zem_slink" title="Digital single-lens reflex camera" rel="wikipedia" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Digital_single-lens_reflex_camera">DSLR</a> cameras with video capabilities, are slowly changing the world of video and film making. The ability to use a wide varity of lenses, the high quality image, portability of the cameras, and high quality sensors, sounds like an indy filmmaker dream.<br />
Therefore it is not a huge surprise to see online forums full with enthusiasts, as well as Vimeo groups with stunning videos made on a budget. <a href="http://www.laforetvisuals.com/" target="_blank">Vincent Lafouret</a>, LA based filmmaker was one of the first people who advocated these cameras, in the best way possible: creating this stunning video:<br />
<object classid="clsid:d27cdb6e-ae6d-11cf-96b8-444553540000" width="500" height="275" codebase="http://download.macromedia.com/pub/shockwave/cabs/flash/swflash.cab#version=6,0,40,0"><param name="allowfullscreen" value="true" /><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always" /><param name="src" value="http://vimeo.com/moogaloop.swf?clip_id=7151244&amp;server=vimeo.com&amp;show_title=0&amp;show_byline=0&amp;show_portrait=0&amp;color=ff4000&amp;fullscreen=1" /><embed type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="500" height="275" src="http://vimeo.com/moogaloop.swf?clip_id=7151244&amp;server=vimeo.com&amp;show_title=0&amp;show_byline=0&amp;show_portrait=0&amp;color=ff4000&amp;fullscreen=1" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true"></embed></object></p>
<p>Not too long after that Canon introduced its <a href="http://www.usa.canon.com/consumer/controller?act=ModelInfoAct&amp;fcategoryid=139&amp;modelid=19356">7D model</a> (which I proudly own), that introduced new key features (such as the most coveted frame rate of 24 frames per second - the same as film), in almost half the price of the 5D Mark II. And then the <a href="http://www.dpreview.com/previews/CanonEOS550D/">550D</a>, half the price of the 7D.</p>
<p>The ability to produce amazing looking videos was quickly advocated by the gear company Zacuto and <a href="http://philipbloom.co.uk/">Philip Bloom</a>, a gifted video maker who contributed a lot to the community through his blog and videos explaining how to best utilize these cameras.<br />
Even my filmmaking hero Robert Rodriguez, <a href="http://www.zacuto.com/robert-rodriguez-canon-7d-zacuto" target="_blank">was caught using these cameras</a> for some of his productions.<br />
<strong> </strong></p>
<p><strong>Money To Be Made?<br />
</strong>Using an HDSLR camera for video requires more than just a camera. As these cameras are built for stills photography in mind, their ergonomics and features don't answer some key needs of video makers. And where there is a void in the market, there is money to be made. A new market for support gear and rigs was born, with companies such as <a href="http://www.zacuto.com/" target="_blank">Zacuto</a> and <a href="http://www.redrockmicro.com/redrock_dslr.html" target="_blank">RedRock Micro </a>leading the pack. These companies, originating mainly from the film and video industry, price their equipment accordingly. And while cameras cost less and less due to mass production, HDSLR video makers find themselves spending more money on rigs than on their camera. Still, price point of a fully equipped HDSLR camera provides amazing production value for fraction of the price of comparable equipment.</p>
<p><strong>From Hobbyists to Mainstream<br />
</strong> In the last months two important announcements changed the way HDSLR cameras are perceived:<br />
George Lucas, the visionary filmmaker, announced that <a href="http://hdslrshooter.wordpress.com/2010/05/13/behind-the-scenes-on-lucasfilms-red-tails-with-the-canon-dslrs/" target="_blank">he will use 5D Mark II in his next film</a>. We are talking about theatrical release. The real thing. With Lucas. The guy behind Star Wars.<br />
AND Greg Yaitanes, Director of House MD, <a href="http://twitter.com/GregYaitanes/status/11731103539" target="_blank">announced on Twitter</a> that the season finale, airing tonight , was shot entirely on 5D Mark II.<br />
These announcements have a huge impact on the HDSLR market, and filmmaking as a whole. HDSLR cameras are ready for prime time TV and feature films. And they cost a fraction of a professional HD video camera, not to mention film equipment.</p>
<p>Since the birth of YouTube, indy filmmakers and budget productions could easily distribute their content, but couldn't afford to get the production value of high end films. Now they can do it.</p>
<p><strong>It is all about talent now</strong>.</p>
<p>In the next post we'll cover the reactions and backfire against the HDSLR movement.</p>

I am sucker for suspension of disblief, sotrytelling, and that unique feeling when the lights go out and the screen starts flickering. That's why I see at least  a film a week (though lately there weren't so many good ones)</p>
<p>I was asked by my students to prepare a list of recommended films. So this is the first batch of films that I love. In this batch I concentrated on the ones with somewhat darker themes, the next batches will include additional angles... <!--more--></p>
<p><a href="http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0125659/"><strong>Abre Los Ojos</strong></a><strong> </strong>- an amazing Spanish film from 1997 by <a href="http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0024622/" target="_blank">Alejandro Amenbar</a>, tells the story of a handsome guy wounded in a car accident, who tries to rebuild his life, but believe that he is losing his mind. Beyond philosophical aspects in the tale of a man haunted by his past, this film tells his story in an appealing and intriguing way. You feel that you are loosing it with the lead actor. Do yourself a favor and skip the American version of this film - Vanilla Sky (not linking to it so you won't be tempted to go and see it). This is a great example why some films should not be touched.<br />
<object classid="clsid:d27cdb6e-ae6d-11cf-96b8-444553540000" width="425" height="344" codebase="http://download.macromedia.com/pub/shockwave/cabs/flash/swflash.cab#version=6,0,40,0"><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true" /><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always" /><param name="src" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/yeLZgDf2Ce0&amp;hl=en_US&amp;fs=1&amp;" /><param name="allowfullscreen" value="true" /><embed type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="425" height="344" src="http://www.youtube.com/v/yeLZgDf2Ce0&amp;hl=en_US&amp;fs=1&amp;" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true"></embed></object></p>
<p><a href="http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0117883/"><strong>Tesis</strong></a> - made by the same director, this psychological horror film tells the story of a film student doing a thesis on violence and media, that stumble upon a snuff film. What's so special about this film is its use of soundtrack and audio in general. In one of the scariest scenes I've seen till now in a horror film, there are no visuals, just the soundtrack of the snuff film. Scary as hell. This is an early film of Amenbar, and you can feel that it is not as polished as later ones. But the raw quality is there. The cast is pretty much the same as in Abre, and Amenbar stated that the plots are connected. Watch for yourself and try to find the links.<br />
<object classid="clsid:d27cdb6e-ae6d-11cf-96b8-444553540000" width="425" height="344" codebase="http://download.macromedia.com/pub/shockwave/cabs/flash/swflash.cab#version=6,0,40,0"><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true" /><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always" /><param name="src" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/pdotjAOT1pU&amp;hl=en_US&amp;fs=1&amp;" /><param name="allowfullscreen" value="true" /><embed type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="425" height="344" src="http://www.youtube.com/v/pdotjAOT1pU&amp;hl=en_US&amp;fs=1&amp;" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true"></embed></object></p>
<p><a href="http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0071360/"><strong>The Conversation</strong></a> - a masterpiece by Coppola. A story of a surveillance expert who feels uneasy about his last assignment, and slowly starting to feel that he is being followed. Two very unique elements in this film are the strong feeling of being watched, even as a viewer, and the last scene, when the life of the lead role crumble.<br />
<object classid="clsid:d27cdb6e-ae6d-11cf-96b8-444553540000" width="425" height="344" codebase="http://download.macromedia.com/pub/shockwave/cabs/flash/swflash.cab#version=6,0,40,0"><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true" /><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always" /><param name="src" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/vrhRsZ56b4g&amp;hl=en_US&amp;fs=1&amp;" /><param name="allowfullscreen" value="true" /><embed type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="425" height="344" src="http://www.youtube.com/v/vrhRsZ56b4g&amp;hl=en_US&amp;fs=1&amp;" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true"></embed></object></p>
<p><strong><a href="http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0116922/">Lost Highway </a></strong>- Lynch made many amazing films, but this is my favorite. A story of two men who face their deepest emotions and fears in LA, filled with gangsters, porn stars, and other dark figures. This is one of those films you can watch over and over again, and get a new perspective and insight about the characters and what they mean (Lynch, you know....). My favorite scene is the one at the party early in the movie where the white faced gangaster tells Fred Medisson that he is in his house - and that he can call and find out. You don't want to know what happens next.<br />
<object classid="clsid:d27cdb6e-ae6d-11cf-96b8-444553540000" width="425" height="344" codebase="http://download.macromedia.com/pub/shockwave/cabs/flash/swflash.cab#version=6,0,40,0"><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true" /><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always" /><param name="src" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/vZLQW2qr5Hs&amp;hl=en_US&amp;fs=1&amp;" /><param name="allowfullscreen" value="true" /><embed type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="425" height="344" src="http://www.youtube.com/v/vZLQW2qr5Hs&amp;hl=en_US&amp;fs=1&amp;" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true"></embed></object></p>
<p><strong><a href="http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0409459/">Watchmen</a> - </strong>Yes, it isn't as good as the original comics, and it lost some of the layers in the original masterpiece. But still, it gets you thinking about the limitations of power. Some strong scenes, and probably one of the best opening sequences I've ever seen. Read the original, a true multilayered story with many storytelling tricks that makes you think.<br />
<object classid="clsid:d27cdb6e-ae6d-11cf-96b8-444553540000" width="480" height="295" codebase="http://download.macromedia.com/pub/shockwave/cabs/flash/swflash.cab#version=6,0,40,0"><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true" /><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always" /><param name="src" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/qXRdlOvLNeo&amp;hl=en_US&amp;fs=1&amp;" /><param name="allowfullscreen" value="true" /><embed type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="480" height="295" src="http://www.youtube.com/v/qXRdlOvLNeo&amp;hl=en_US&amp;fs=1&amp;" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true"></embed></object><br />
<strong><a href="http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0059646/">Repulsion</a></strong> - <a href="http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000591/">Polanski</a> tells a story of a young beautiful woman, left alone in her sister's apartment, slowly losing touch with reality and forced to face her deepest fears - or fantasies. one of the most disturbing I've ever seen. Watch out for the rabbit.<br />
<object classid="clsid:d27cdb6e-ae6d-11cf-96b8-444553540000" width="425" height="344" codebase="http://download.macromedia.com/pub/shockwave/cabs/flash/swflash.cab#version=6,0,40,0"><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true" /><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always" /><param name="src" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/iO0niGPR5S4&amp;hl=en_US&amp;fs=1&amp;" /><param name="allowfullscreen" value="true" /><embed type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="425" height="344" src="http://www.youtube.com/v/iO0niGPR5S4&amp;hl=en_US&amp;fs=1&amp;" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true"></embed></object></p>
<p><strong><a href="http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0071315/">Chinatown</a></strong> - a true masterpiece, also by Polanki. Story of a PI getting way too much involved in a case of a young woman hiring his services. He wasn't perepared for the level of perversion he would face by the end of his journey.<br />
<object classid="clsid:d27cdb6e-ae6d-11cf-96b8-444553540000" width="425" height="344" codebase="http://download.macromedia.com/pub/shockwave/cabs/flash/swflash.cab#version=6,0,40,0"><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true" /><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always" /><param name="src" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/2yJJWXhXbuI&amp;hl=en_US&amp;fs=1&amp;" /><param name="allowfullscreen" value="true" /><embed type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="425" height="344" src="http://www.youtube.com/v/2yJJWXhXbuI&amp;hl=en_US&amp;fs=1&amp;" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true"></embed></object><br />
<strong><a href="http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0134273/">8 MM</a> - </strong>probably the only Nicolas Cage film worth watching. Cage is a PI asked by an elderly woman to find a girl filmed in a snuff film found in a safety deposit box of her late, rich husband. Cage is drawn to the siddy world of underground porn to find the girl, while losing himself in the process.<br />
<object classid="clsid:d27cdb6e-ae6d-11cf-96b8-444553540000" width="425" height="344" codebase="http://download.macromedia.com/pub/shockwave/cabs/flash/swflash.cab#version=6,0,40,0"><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true" /><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always" /><param name="src" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/9ymYZ4Hh5UA&amp;hl=en_US&amp;fs=1&amp;" /><param name="allowfullscreen" value="true" /><embed type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="425" height="344" src="http://www.youtube.com/v/9ymYZ4Hh5UA&amp;hl=en_US&amp;fs=1&amp;" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true"></embed></object></p>
